Formerly Lake McDonald, Lake Austin is a water reservoir located on the Colorado River; formed in 1939, this reservoir was created by the LCRA (Lower Colorado River Authority).
Popular for boating and fishing, Lake Austin is thought to have an excellent stock of largemouth bass, as well as cliffs so high they provide shelter from the wind, creating the best scenario for boating activities. These high cliffs are also home to various luxury properties, with many homes overlooking the lake, and some with dual views of downtown Austin.
The bridge over Lake Austin on Loop 360, known as the Pennybacker Bridge, is an Austin icon and also a great point for launching your boat. Or, grab lunch/dinner from The Hula Hut or Abel’s on The Lake and launch from The Hula Hut boat dock.
