Born and raised in Dallas, blues guitarists Stevie Ray Vaughan made a name for himself in the Live Music Capitol of the World during the mid-70’s. By 1982 Vaughan and his band Double Trouble had become one of the most popular bands in Texas.
Following a concert in 1983, Stevie Ray boarded a helicopter which sadly crashed minutes after takeoff – killing the 35-year old Vaughan and four passengers.
In honor of the influence he had in Austin and the music industry as a whole, the city of Austin erected the Stevie Ray Vaughan Memorial Statue at Auditorium Shores on Lady Bird Lake in 1994. This site marks the spot of a number of Vaughan’s concerts and has become one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions.
Vaughan’s fans are still devoted to this day – flowers and remembrances can almost always be found at the foot of his statue or tucked in the little pocket between his guitar and hand.
Known for its scenic view of the downtown Austin skyline, not only did Auditorium Shores host numerous Stevie Ray Vaughan concerts, it is still the site for many major music performances in Austin today including South by Southwest and Fun Fun Fun Fest.
Surrounding Auditorium Shores is the Lady Bird Lake Hike and Bike Trail. This unique 10 miles of trails in downtown Austin is a staple for walkers, runners, cyclists and four legged friends alike. Go for a run, stop and feed the ducks along the trail, rent a canoe or go paddle boarding. Lady Bird Lake is Austin’s outdoor social hub.
