Located at the northern end of Congress Ave in downtown Austin, the State Capitol represents the determination and hard work of the many people that made this great state what it is today.
The current capitol building was built between 1882-1888. Its exterior is constructed of Texas red granite, and its interior from Texas limestone. At its completion the building consisted of 392 rooms, 18 vaults, 924 windows, and 404 doors. The dome measures 311 feet from the ground to the top of the statue. The Texas Capitol is open to tourists from 7 a.m. – 10 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. on weekends.
Modeled after the National Capitol in Washington, D.C., the design of the Texas Capitol is Renaissance Revival, and stands to be the largest of all the state capitol buildings.
Not only is downtown the home to the State Capitol, is it also home to Austin’s renowned evening entertainment, numerous museums and exhibitions, innovative and ever-changing dining options, boutique shopping, and of course live music for day or night enjoyment.
